James Alexander Mitchell's Obituary
James Alexander Mitchell was born March 18, 1936 in London, England to Minnie and Archibald Mitchell. He began walking at nine months and rarely stopped moving throughout his life. He was the oldest of four siblings (June Walker, Jean Townsend, and Margaret Mitchell). As a young man he loved many activities including bike riding, rock climbing and camping. Although James did not have too many years of formal education, he was a learned man because he was a voracious reader. James was in the British Army as part of the Royal Corp of Signals. Later he worked at the post office in London. He met the love of his life at his sister June’s wedding in England. He soon sold his motorcycle to buy a ticket to America aboard the steam ship christened the American Banker. James married Nancy Mitchell in 1962. Soon after they had three sons; Brian (Elaine), Andrew (Shannon) and Patrick (MaryAnn). James and Nancy have five grandchildren (Jon, Zac, Alex, Nathan, and Maddy). He was a devoted family man and organized many camping trips and adventures over the years. He worked his entire career for Comerica Bank, retiring in 1992. After retirement, Jim and Nancy spend 30 years traveling to all fifty states and abroad to many countries. James and Nancy also loved to entertain people at their beautiful home in Germantown TN. When they were not traveling, James discovered his inner artist. He was a lifelong woodworker but after retiring he began his most creative period using the lathe. He shared many beautiful pieces with family and friends. For many years he was known for his trademark pipe, a glass of bourbon and telling tales to all who would listen for as long as they would listen. He will be missed by all who knew him. The visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the service time at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 10, 2022 at Memorial Park Funeral Home. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mr. James A. Mitchell's honor can be made to the Salvation Army or the National Kidney Foundation.
