James McCown's Obituary
James E. McCown, Jr., 81, of Germantown, died April 19, 2011 at Methodist LeBonheur Germantown Hospital. The family will receive friends Thursday, April 21 from 4-6 p.m., and services will be Friday, April 22 at 10 a.m., all at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Rosehill Cemetery in Fayetteville, TN. Mr. McCown was born and raised in Fayetteville, TN and attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville where he walked on and earned a scholarship in football. After graduation in 1951, Mr. McCown joined the Marine Corps and was an infantry officer. He then married his wife, Loretta, on March 28, 1953 in Richmond, VA and began working for USF&G Insurance Co. in Little Rock, AR. After promotions in the Indianapolis, IN branch office in 1967 and 1974, Mr. McCown was promoted to Manager of the Memphis branch office in 1978. He retired after 34 years of service to USF&G. During that time, he was elected president of both the Surety Association of Arkansas and of Indianapolis. Mr. McCown was also an associate member of the Insurors of Memphis, the Insurors of Tennesee, the Independent Insurance Agents of Arkansas, and the Memphis and Shelby County Insurance Advisory Committee. Mr. McCown attended Advent Presbyterian Church and had been a Deacon and an Elder in various Presbyterian Churches throughout his life. He enjoyed all competition, but especially football, and was an avid golfer and tennis player. Mr. McCown leaves his wife of 58 years, Loretta Hicks McCown; daughter, Sue M. Clark, and her husband, G. Edmond Clark, of Germantown, Tn; son, James E. McCown III and his wife, Lorie H. McCown, of Fredericksburg, VA; sister, Martha McCown McClure of Malvern, AR, and grandchildren, J. Edmond Clark, G. David Clark, Anna M. Clark, Thomas J. McCown, Rachel M. McCown, and Samuel G.
