James Chapman Long's Obituary
James Chapman Long (Jamie Long), 52, of New Orleans, LA, passed away on Wednesday, July 27th, 2022.
He was born on February 14th, 1970, to Dr. Rodney Long Sr. and Dorothy Davis Long, in Memphis, TN. Jamie was the middle child of an older brother, Rodney Long Jr., and a younger sister, Merrie. Jamie was an athletic child who loved to wrestle and ride motorcycles.
Jamie attended ECS and Germantown High School and graduated from Memphis State University with a degree in Finance. He had his first child, Austin, at 25 and moved to New Orleans, LA, in 1996 to pursue a career in medical sales. He had his second child, Molly, when he was 33.
Jamie started his medical device company, Vortex Spine, in New Orleans. After Hurricane Katrina, he continued to expand his company’s scope throughout the state and country. He remained president of Vortex Spine for over ten years. Jamie was incredibly passionate about his commitment to his work. He also loved spending time with his family at his second home in Cherokee, Alabama. Jamie was always the life of the party and knew how to make anyone laugh. His strong charisma and gift of humor helped him excel in his career and create strong bonds with his friends. He was always a pleasure to be around, and everyone that met him had a fun story to share about a time they spent with Jamie. Jamie loved riding bikes and driving fast cars, boats, and ATVs. He also owned a tractor that he loved to drive. Jamie was a practicing Christian and enjoyed reading the Bible. Jamie has faced many challenges over the past few years, but he was always able to rebound through adversity. His strength throughout his life is remembered by those he loved.
Jamie had two children, one with Jamie Hatfield, who lives in Collierville, and another with Rhonda Doughty, who predeceased him in December 2012. His two children are Jack Austin Long (27), who resides in Memphis, TN, and Molly Jean Long (19), who lived with Jamie. He is survived by his older brother Rodney, younger sister Merrie, his nieces Hayden and Anna, his nephew Andrew, his stepmother Susan, and a very dear friend, Michelle. Everyone knew Jamie as a tough guy and a jokester, but he was a family man and devoted to spending quality time with those he loved. Jamie leaves behind many friends and family across the country and will be missed by all.
