James "Jim" Lee Stiles' Obituary
James Lee Stiles (Jim) peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on February 4, 2024, at the age of 75.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Sherrie Stiles, and their children: Nick Stiles (Emily), Natalie Wingo (Billy), and James Lee Stiles II (Laurie). Jim is also remembered by his seven beloved grandchildren: Ella (16), Addie (15), Owen (13), Lilly (12), Laura Claire (10), Hadley (5), and his namesake, James Lee Stiles III (2). Jim was affectionately known as "Papoo."
He is preceded in death by his parents, Shelley and Mary Stiles, and his brother, Shelley Stiles.
Born on April 22, 1948, in Kingston, TN, Jim's family later moved to Memphis, where he graduated from Messick High School in 1966. He went on to graduate from Memphis State in 1971.
In 1974, Jim married his beloved wife Sherrie, celebrating almost 50 years of marriage. Their enduring commitment was a testament to the strength of their vows, inspiring those around them.
Jim had a commanding voice that resonated in numerous commercials in the 80s. As the owner of a recording studio (Stiles Sound Studios) he produced solo albums, commercials and collaborated with other artists. For almost 40 years, Jim and Sherrie were cherished members of Germantown Baptist Church, where Jim's beautiful voice enriched the GBC Choir with solo and duet performances. His voice sounded uncannily like Andy Williams.
A successful entrepreneur, Jim passionately operated his insurance company, The Select Group, for many years. He also excelled as a talented tax agent and occasionally ventured into real estate.
An avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, Jim cherished annual St. Louis Cardinal trips with his sons and grandson. At home, he set up a recording studio where his grandchildren enjoyed singing karaoke. Jim adored the chaos of family gatherings, quietly observing and relishing those moments.
Above all, Jim's love for the Lord was unwavering. He dedicated time daily to worship, often expressing his devotion through music. As we remember him, we find comfort in knowing that Jim is now singing to his Savior. His absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt; Jim was a dearly loved husband, father, and Papoo.
A ceremony to celebrate Jim’s life will be held on Friday, February 9, at Germantown Baptist Church Faith Building (9450 Poplar Avenue). Visitation will
take place from 11am to 1pm, followed by a service at 1pm. A funeral procession will then lead to the graveside service at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery (5668 Poplar Ave). Memorial Park will be assisting the family with the arrangements.
In Lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Midnight Mission.
