Dr. James H. Holmes Sr.'s Obituary
Rev. Dr. James Harmon Holmes, Sr., passed away peacefully at 8:45 am on June 29, 2021, at the age of 90. He was born in 1930 on October 16th. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Ida S. Holmes.
He will be lovingly remembered by Lynn Blumenthal (daughter) and Terry Blumenthal, Jim Holmes, Jr. (son) and Jo Ellen Holmes, Rev. Julie McKenna (daughter) and Greg McKenna. Grand children Daniel, Aaron, Sarah, Nathan, and Kathryn.
He has a Doctor of Theology from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a United Methodist Minister for over 50 years serving in various capacities and shepherding congregations in Georgia, New York, and Tennessee. Some of his notable appointments included: Riverside Church, NY, NY (1964-1972)), District Superintendent, Memphis Asbury District (1975-1980) , Germantown United Methodist Church (1980-1989), Director , Conference Council on Ministries, Memphis Annual Conference (1989-1995).
He loved to sing old hymns and harmonize. He also played the piano and organ. He also enjoyed woodworking, gardening, writing, and keeping up with current events.
The funeral service will be at Germantown United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6, 2021. Visitation with family will occur from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in the narthex. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Germantown United Methodist Church.
