James Goolsby's Obituary
James Carlton Goolsby, 87 of Memphis, passed away on Friday, November 22, 2013. James was born and reared in Lafayette County, Mississippi. He served in the Navy on the aircraft carrier, Intrepid. He participated in the Battles of Midway and the Coral Sea. He retired from Fairbanks Colt Industries after serving as a service representative and as district manager. In his youth, hunting on the vast family land was his passion. Later, an avid fisherman, he especially enjoyed fishing this past year fishing at Beaver Dam with his son-in-law, Robert, who patiently took him when he was unable to go alone. Stories James could tell about his youth were enjoyed by his grandchildren and nephews. Family dinners and holidays were happy occasions for Dorothy and him. They cooked many dishes to make sure different ones had their favorites. Country ham and biscuits were prepared with plenty for “take home”. He was preceded in death by his parents, P.F. and Mary Lou Goolsby and his brother, Pleas F. Goolsby. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dorothy Collins Goolsby, their daughter, Mary Anita Goolsby Coughlin (Robert), two grandchildren, Alex Coughlin (Meredith), Elizabeth Coughlin Owen (Anthony) and twin great-grandchildren, Catherine Collins Owen and James Robert Owen. He is, also, survived by nephews, a niece and great-nephews and great-nieces. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 24th. Visitation will be at 1:30 and services will follow at 2:30. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to St. Matthew’s Methodist Church at 1362 Prescott St. South, Memphis, TN 38111, where he and his wife have been members for 55 years.
