James "Larry" Gardner's Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James "Larry" Gardner, age 81. A lifelong Memphian, Larry, was born in Tupelo, MS, the son of James C. Gardner and Mattie Lou Gardner. He was a proud member of the 1960 class at Whitehaven High School and went to Memphis State University.
Larry's life was characterized by dedication, service, and kindness. His career in the bus business, notably his tenure with Greyhound Lines, spanned several decades, and he rose through the ranks to become a respected Regional Manager in the mid-south. He finished his career as Operations Manager for Coach USA.
He was an active member of Broadway Baptist Church. His warm demeanor endeared him to many, creating enduring friendships in Whitehaven and Southaven as well as with his work friends and customers. He coached baseball, basketball, and was a Boy Scout Leader. He was always active at Holy Cross Lutheran School and Memphis Prep.
Larry was a devoted family man and could be counted on to help anyone at any time. He had a profound love for fishing and sharing that with others. He loved classic country along with Sun and Stax Records Memphis music. Larry was also an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, Memphis, and Ole Miss.
Larry was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 60 years, Janice C. Gardner, who he selflessly cared for over many years and his sister, Delores Hunt. He is survived by his sons, Jim Gardner (Melinda) of Cabot, AR, and Scott Gardner (Kay) of Franklin, TN.
His legacy lives on through his grandchildren: James (Caroline) and John David (Elizabeth), Peyton, Alex, and Drew Gardner. Larry was also blessed with great-grandchildren Jed and Emmett Gardner. His extended family loved him including many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
