James Davis Foley's Obituary
James Davis Foley passed away August 9, 2015. He was born December 14, 1928 in Lindsay, Oklahoma, the fourth of five children born to Edgar W. and Susie Davis Foley. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Alice King Foley; children Paula Miles, Lynden Foley (Karla), Ann Martin and Ramona Foley; grandchildren Brian Coats, Allison Huie (Russell), Natalie Bauerkemper (David), Thomas Martin and Jeffrey Foley; great grandchildren Jack Huie and Kate Huie; sister Billie Foley Bradley and many nieces and nephews. Jim graduated from Lindsay High School where he excelled both academically and athletically. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geography from Oklahoma State University, a Masters in Education from the College of William and Mary and a Doctorate in Education from Mississippi State University. He entered the US Army as a 2nd Lieutenant and was with the Army Corps of Engineers in the Korean War. He graduated from flight school in San Marcos, TX and helicopter school in Ft. Rucker, AL. He was with the U.S. Army Combat Development Command in Ft. Eustis, Va. and served in Vietnam as a helicopter Battalion Commander. During his military career, he also participated in National Rifle matches. He was stationed in Japan, Germany and multiple stateside posts. He retired after 21 years as a Lieutenant Colonel. After retiring from the Army, he taught History and Social Studies at Trezvant and Hamilton schools in Memphis where he also coached basketball and football. Jim was a huge fan of college sports. He frequently attended the NCAA wrestling championships and loved following NCAA football and basketball. Jim was a member of VFW Post 684, where he served as Quartermaster. He was an avid Bridge Player and member of the American Contract Bridge League. Visitation begins at 1:30 pm followed by a service at 2:30pm, Friday, August 14, 2015, Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Avenue, Memphis TN In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made in his honor to the West Tennessee Veterans Home, Inc., P.O.
