Sergeant Major James Eugene Norris, 92, passed away March 19, 2013. He retired from the U.S. Army. He was a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps instructor with the Memphis City Schools. He was a founding member of Memphis Gun Cl Read Obituary
As with many young men, SGM Norris mentored me also, and helped me in my life change in joining the US Army. I never got back to see him and I regret that as I wanted to thank him, but I am sure he knows it now. My teacher, mentor and friend. Thanks to his family for sharing him with us. RIP
I want the family to know that Sergeant Major Norris touched my life as a student at Trezevant High School (Class of 1970). He not only mentored me as a member of “his” JROTC Rifle Team but encouraged me and taught me many things as one of “his” Cadet Officers. I was not a very good marksman but he never gave up on me and encouraged me daily. Also, he made me laugh on a regular basis. He had a great sense of humor and was quite funny. As a high-schooler I was so impressed as he was proud of his immaculate Tbird with 3 deuce carburetors (it was always parked out in front of the Armory). What a great car for a great man and Soldier and Patriot. I have thought about him many times thru the years and think about him now very warmly. Please know that he touched my life and made an impact on this life as a kid.

Sgt. Norris started ROTC at Frayser High School and I was fortunate enough to be in the first class. He was a fine man and an outstanding instructor. His instruction and military knowledge helped me when I joined the military and later in life when I joined the Memphis Police Dept.Sgt. Norris was a fine man and will be greatly missed. My prayers go out to his family and friends. God now has an expert marksman instructor in Heaven with him now. Rest In Peace dear friend.
