James W. Caldwell's Obituary
James W. Caldwell, 79, of Bolivar, TN, formerly of Memphis, died Saturday, July 18, 2009, after a short illness.Jim grew up in Pontotoc, MS before enlisting in the Army, where he achieved the rank of Sergeant.Upon returning from service, Jim attended and graduated from the 11th class of the National Hardwood Lumber Association’s Inspector Training School. He began his career in 1952 at Nickey Brothers Lumber Company in Memphis. In 1962, he opened Caldwell Hardwood Company, wholesaling and brokering hardwood lumber and veneer.Jim’s passion for the hardwood industry was evidenced by 57 years of sales, manufacturing, and involvement in industry associations. He was not only a member but was active in the Lumbermen’s Club of Memphis, serving as Membership Chairman for over 20 years. He was also President of the Club. Jim was honored with the Lumberman of the Year in 2007, in recognition of his service to industry, community, and family. He was also President of the West Side Hardwood Club and the local chapter of Hoo Hoo International.Jim was equally involved in church activities. He worked tirelessly for Woodland Presbyterian Church, serving as Deacon, Elder, and Trustee. Jim was instrumental in raising funds for Woodland’s sanctuary. And, he enjoyed coaching baseball teams at Woodland. He also sat on the Board of Directors of Woodland Presbyterian School.He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joyce Polk Caldwell, two sons Ron and David (Tina), and his granddaughter Sarah (Dan). Jim is also survived by three brothers Gene (Gloria), Wayne (Diana), and Jimmy (Jan), and two sisters Mary Edith Davis and Joan Harrison (Clayton). Jim was preceded in death by a brother Thomas (Mary) and sister Frances Kothe (Joe).Services will be held at 11:30, Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Poplar. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:30-11:30, Tuesday. Burial will follow at 3:00pm at Old Monroe Cemetery in Ponotoc, MS.Memorials may be sent to the Lumbermen’s Educational Fund or charity of choice.
