James Arthur Mewborn's Obituary
James A. Mewborn of Memphis died on July 20, 2013 at Highlands of Memphis, which had been his home for the last 4 years. Mr. Mewborn was born and raised in Macon, TN, attended Lambuth College and Memphis School of Commerce. He served in the Army from Oct. 1941 to Oct. 1945, including nearly 2 years in the Persian Gulf. In 1948, he met and married Ella Margaret Holland, to whom he was married for over 52 years until her death in 2001. He worked for a number of years as a civilian employee of the USAF and from 1966 until his retirement in 1986 as a personnel staffing specialist at the Defense Depot Memphis. Mr. Mewborn was an active member of Rebecca Memorial Methodist Church for 40 years and then Asbury UMC for the last 25 years. Words that described his grandfather also apply to Mr. Mewborn: he tried to deal justly, loved mercy, and walked humbly before God. He is preceded in death by his brother Walter and sisters Myrtle, Lillie, Louise, and Mary Kay. He is survived by daughter Ada M. Driscoll (Joseph) of Selmer, TN and son James F. Mewborn (Susan) of Edina, MN, 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and sister-in-law Maynell Horton, as well as numerous other friends and relatives. A celebration of Mr. Mewborn’s life will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home on July 25 at 1 pm, preceded by visitation at 12:00 pm. Memorial donations may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, Memphis Union Mission, or the Salvation Army.
