I first met Lasley at an MLA convention in the late 70’s, when I was just beginning my career as a professor of English. We were on a panel together and discovered that we shared interests in the early magazine literature that influenced Edgar Allan Poe. We corresponded occasionally after that about these interests, and I very much enjoyed the occasions we had to converse at other professional meetings. Even though he did not know me well, he was very encouraging of my work at that early phase of my career, which I greatly appreciated. He had a sharp intelligence and a kind and generous spirit.

Dr. Dameron was a very, very dear man and eminent literary researcher, whose thoughtfulness and intelligence charmed everyone he met. He was one of the founding members of the Poe Studies Association, and we are so grateful for his contributions over the years. We will pay tribute to Lasley in the fall issue of the Edgar Allan Poe Review and republish an interview with him from the first issue of the Poe Review (Vol. 1, no. 1, Fall 2000). Barbara Cantalupo
