Iva Kathryn McCommon's Obituary
Iva Kathryn McCommon, 84, went to be with the Lord on April 8, 2016. She leaves her husband, Hubert, of 64 years; two sons, Dennis (Traci) of Orlando, Florida and Chris (Lauraine) of Merritt Island, Florida; five grandsons, Michael (Monika), Stephen, David, Corey and Ben. She is also survived by one sister, Jeanette Dixon Williams of Southaven, MS; two brothers, Leon (Alice) Dixon of Columbia, TN and Cornelius (June) Dixon of Somerville, TN and many nieces, nephews and friends. Kathryn and Hubert traveled extensively including trips to Europe and the Holy Land. She was actively involved in the Baptist Women’s Missionary Union, teaching classes, and helping in any way she could. She also served as her husband’s bookkeeper/secretary in the consulting and real estate business. One of her major accomplishments was working alongside her husband in the development of the Laotian ministry located at First Baptist Church of Memphis that began in 1978. It is now known as the International Ministry meeting in the basement of the church. Many Missionaries now serve in foreign countries as a result of this ministry. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 12 at 11 am in the chapel of First Baptist Church at the corner of Poplar Avenue and North Parkway, the family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10 am. Brunch will follow the service at the church. The graveside service will follow the brunch at 2 pm at Memorial Park Cemetery on Poplar Avenue.Services have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave, Memphis TN 38119.
