Imogene Joyner's Obituary
Imogene Joyner, 94, was born in the Campground Community of Tipton County Tennessee on December 1, 1928, to Mattie and Marvin Joyner. Imogene died peacefully on November 24, 2023, at her home in the Village of Germantown. Visitation will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery and Funeral Home on Friday, December 1st from 1 pm to 2 pm followed by a Service at 2 pm.
Imogene was an inspirational leader for her family, faith, friends, and the world. She received a BA from Lambuth University in Jackson TN, a master’s from Scarritt College in Nashville TN, and a degree from the University of Tennessee Pathology School. She worked as a Methodist Missionary in Africa, a Field Director for the Girl Scouts, and a biology teacher for the Memphis City Schools. Imogene was a longtime member of Mullins Methodist Church in Memphis. She leaves numerous loving nieces, nephews, great nieces/nephews, students, and friends from around the world. One of her friends, the late Lee Hee-Ho, a former First Lady of South Korea, started as pen pal, turned into a college friend after Imogene helped her attend Lambuth and Scarritt, and in 2002, personally thanked Imogene for her help and friendship at the Blue House in Seoul.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family of 7 children, including her twin sister, Emogene. Imogene’s first publication was “The Joyner Families from Tipton and Shelby Counties”, which she researched and published in 2000. Imogene indeed embodied the title of her 2nd book, “A Life of Many Tales”, which she wrote in 2005. If you wish to honor her memory by making a donation, please send to Mullins Methodist Church Memphis Tennessee.
