Jean was born January 9, 1932, to Cecil Clyde Coke and Pearl White Coke in Memphis,
Tennessee. She was the youngest of five children. She graduated from Messick High
School in 1950. In September of that year she married the love of her life, Lloyd Perry
Britt, Sr. Shortly after marriage, they made their home in West Memphis, Arkansas
where they reared three children. Jean was a stay-at-home mother, substitute teacher,
Girl Scout leader and camp director. At 48 years of age, she became a physician’s
assistant for Doctor Ralph Hamilton. She also studied and trained to become an EMT -
an accomplishment of which she was very proud. She was involved in the lives of her
children by serving as PTA president and band booster parent. She served the
community as board member for the West Memphis Library. She continued to be active
after her children were grown as a member of the Republican Women’s club. She
served on their board and as the club chaplain for several years.
She was baptized into Christ at the Normal Church of Christ. She became a member of
the Union Avenue Church of Christ and attended there until the congregation became
Woodland Hills and moved to Cordova. At the time of her death, she had been a long
time member at the Germantown Church of Christ. Jean loved her church family and
served as a teacher for young children. She had a true heart for Christian service.
With her engaging, bubbly personality, Jean was known for her infectious smile and
warm hugs. People often commented on how gracious and loving Jean was and what
an inspiration she was to them. She was so positive and full of joy - a bright light to
those around her.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Perry Britt, Sr., her parents, C.C. Coke,
Sr. and Pearl Coke, her three brothers, Cecil Coke, Chester Coke and Buford Coke, and
one sister, Mamie Cadden.
