Herbert Leon Tate, Jr.'s Obituary
Herbert Leon Tate passed away at his home on December 24, 2011 after a brief illness. He was 84. Herb is survived by his wife of 60 years Wilma Mooney Tate, his daughter Marcia Tate Anthony, his son-in-law Mark S. Anthony and his grandson William Tate Anthony. Born in Memphis on September 28, 1927, Herb attended Treadwell High School where he was a member of the first class of graduates in 1945. For many years, members of that class have held an annual reunion with Herb frequently in attendance. Enlisting in the Navy after graduation, Herb served primarily in the Pacific theater during WWII. After his time in the service, Herb attended Memphis State University. He graduated in 1950 with a business degree and a major in Management. While at the University, he was a charter member of Sigma Phi Epsilon serving the fraternity as treasurer. Herb spent his working career in various positions with the State of Tennessee in the Department of Revenue. He retired as Tax Audit Manager after 47 years of service. In addition to his work for the state, Herb was an active member of many philanthropic organizations. He was a 32nd degree mason, a member of the Scottish Rite and a Shriner. He was also a long time member of the East Memphis Lions Club. Over the years, he held the office of Treasurer and President as well as being elected the Lion of the Decade in the 1980’s. Herb was a member of Highland Heights Methodist Church for more than 65 years. The son of a charter member, he was married to Wilma there in 1951. In addition to his attendance, Herb served the church in various officer positions on the Board of Trustees. During his retirement years, Herb enjoyed working in his yard and playing golf. He also maintained relationships with his childhood friends and their offspring. However, his greatest joy was spending time with his grandson Will. Memorial Services will be held Wednesday December 28, 2011 at 10am at Highland Heights Methodist Church located at Summer Avenue and Highland Street.
