Herbert Warren Powell's Obituary
Herbert Warren Powell, 88, originally of Charlottesville, died peacefully Saturday January 10th 2015, surrounded by his family in Memphis. Born October 10th, 1926 in Nelson County, Virginia, he was the son of the late Willie Andrew Powell and Florence Lillian Ramsey. Herbert leaves his daughter, Caroline Warren McCool and husband Allen, and granddaughter, Caroline Watkins McCool, of Memphis. Herbert was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Barbara Sprouse Powell, and by his sisters Florence Craig, and Carrie Estelle Powell Sjostrom; and brothers Clarence Powell, and Bill Powell. Herbert is survived by his sisters Elizabeth Beddow and husband Wayne, Mildred Marshall and husband Tommy, and Charlotte Brock, all of Charlottesville; and by his brother David Powell and wife Genevieve of Charlottesville. President of his McIntire High School class, Herbert shipped out to serve his country as a soldier in the Philippines immediately upon graduation. He then became a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, and served there faithfully until his retirement. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Charlottesville. Herbert was a boxer and a very talented golfer, and remained physically strong throughout his life. Family and friends will never forget his exceptionally kind and gentlemanly manner, as well as the generosity with which he gave his time to any family task. In that capacity, Herbert tirelessly rescued and recovered lost family members in the aftermath of Hurricane Camille in Nelson County. Herbert was so very proud of his beloved granddaughter, Callie. He was also an ardent sports fan, having a special affinity for the Virginia Cavaliers, and the Washington Redskins. A private funeral service will be held at Memorial Park in Memphis on Tuesday January 13th, 2015, with Chaplain Jeff Rice officiating. The family most gratefully appreciates the loving care provided by Foxbridge Assisted Living, and Crossroads Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts to Foxbridge Assisted Living Community (care of United Methodist Homes), or a charity of the donor’s choice.Services will be private. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119, “Behind the Stone Wall.”
