Herbert Stanley Forbes' Obituary
Herbert Stanley Forbes, a true gentleman and World War II veteran, Stan, fondly known as Gramps to his grandchildren, went to be with the Lord and join his sweet wife, Mary. Born to Colie and Iona Moore Forbes in Atoka in Tipton County, Tennessee, on September 1, 1917, he was one of five children, including brothers, Casey Forbes and Neal Forbes (both deceased) and two sisters, Virginia Jordan and Thelma Duke. He was married in 1939 to Jackie Rushing Forbes, who died in 1980. He then married Mary Torrey Forbes in 1981 until her passing in 2012. His extended family included four stepchildren: Creighton E. Torrey, Dolores Graham, Dawn Greer Lester (deceased), and Mary Beth Hernandez. He also leaves seven grandchildren- Anne Marie Fiorino, Brandi Bertram, Dax Torrey, Sonia Torrey, Shane Greer, Daniel Hernandez, and Caitlin Laney – seven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and their children. Gramps attended West Tennessee State Teacher’s College (known now as the University of Memphis) in 1936 and played football there. Later, he enlisted in the United States Army on August 24, 1943, and marched all over Europe with General Patton’s Third Army being awarded a Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged March 10, 1946, and promptly began a career in electrical work, ultimately having retired from MLGW before working another twenty years for National Electric Company. He was also very active in the community, serving as a member of Grimes Memorial Methodist Church from 1951 to present, as a Mason, and as a Shriner. And on most Saturdays in the fall, he could be found either listening to or watching his beloved Tennessee Vols play football. Gramps will be truly missed by his loved ones. He was a true gentleman and role model. Visitation will be Saturday, December 27,2014 at Memorial Park Funeral Home from 12:00 until the service at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow at Memorial Park.
