I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Butts. Even though I had never met Dr. Butts, I feel as if I new him. I suppose that is because my father, Robert C. Egan, would always talk about what a special relationship he had with Dr. Butts. Dr. Butts not only was his friend while serving in the U.S. Navy during World War ll, he was my father’s best man when he was married. I can only hope that they are, once again, sharing that special relationship.Jerry J. Egan
I will never EVER forget the Tennessee Dental Association meeting in Memphis in 2000 at the President’s Party. Dr. Butts stepped onto the dance floor and danced like it was the last day of his life! His moves were lithe, his balance perfect, his enthusiasm contagious. I asked someone how old he was and they said about 80. I nearly had a heart attack – he was more activated and poised that the 60 year olds on the floor. At that moment he became one of my mentors for life. He was one of the friendliest dental colleagues you would ever meet. Our profession suffers a great loss today and I will dearly miss him.
I was saddened to hear of Dr. Butts’ passing. As mentioned in his obituary, I never dreamed he was as old as he was! I was a dental student during the time Dr. Butts was at UTCHS. It was an era in dental education when our dental instructors were not know for their kindness or willingness to mentor dental students. Dr. Butts was the exception to that rule. He was always willing to help if we had a problem. After graduation, if I ran into him at dental meetings, he always was eager to talk and catch up on what I was doing. As I started becoming more active in organized dentistry, he always had encouraging words for me.
