Helen Louise Suriani's Obituary
Helen Louis Suriani, 93 years old, was born November 4, 1922 and died May 27, 2016. She was married to Angelo Joseph Suriani who died in 1986. Helen raised four children: Donald (Sara), Michael, Richard (Deborah) and Angela. She worked at Lowenstein’s Department Store at Poplar and Highland for several years until the store closed. As member of St. Anne Catholic Church on Highland where she was an active member of the Altar Society and Our Ladies of Charity, she continued to attend mass on Saturday, even as her health began to fade. One of her favorite activities was to join friends after Mass for a trip to a nearby restaurant. Our mother loved to cook and would spend all day making real Italian pizza from a recipe “handed down” through generations. It was that kind of love and attention that made our mother very special. Though she wanted to continue cooking and working about her house, her advanced age made the simplest tasks more difficult and dangerous. When Louise was born there was no internet, Facebook or Twitter. Many times we marveled at her recollections of growing up in rural Chickasaw County, Mississippi and how she and her sisters entertained themselves or how they got into mischief. I will always regret not recording her accounts. I guess we believed she would always be here to tell her stories. She is survived by her four children, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews. She will be missed by all. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, May 31 at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Poplar Ave. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday June 1 at St. Anne Catholic Church at 706 South Highland. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave., Memphis TN 38119. (901) 767-8930. “Celebrating Life….Behind the Stone Wall.”
