Helen H. Batts' Obituary
Helen H. Batts, beloved educator of Memphis, TN, passed away peacefully at her home on October 18, 2024, just two weeks after celebrating her 99th birthday with family. Born on October 3, 1925, Helen dedicated her life to education, earning her Bachelor's of Education from Tennessee State University, followed by a Master's in Education. She served as a teacher and guidance counselor before becoming the principal of Charjean Elementary School, where she impacted countless students for 12 years, retiring in 1993, after serving the Memphis City School system for a total of 46 years.
Even after retirement, Helen cherished the many phone calls and encounters with former students who fondly recalled her influence in their lives. Her passions included high fashion, culinary arts, and hosting lively bridge parties. A proud Diamond member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., she was active in the Beta Epsilon Omega Graduate Chapter in Viemphis. Helen was also a devoted member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, where she enjoyed volunteering for Sunday services and various church events.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Rachel and Johnnie Holmes; her sister, Vernita; and her eldest granddaughter, Elana. Helen is survived by her two daughters, Brenda Horner (Richard) and Denise Allen; her sister, Gloria Riley; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two nieces; and one nephew.
Visitation will be held from 4 P.M. to 6 P.M. on Friday, November 1, 2024, at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Avenue. A funeral service will take place at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, November 2, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 3745 Kimball Avenue, followed by burial at Memorial Park Cemetery and a repast in the Event Hall on site.
Helen will be deeply missed by all who knew her, and her legacy of love and service will continue to inspire generations.
