Hazel Floyd Goodale's Obituary
Hazel Floyd Goodale, 90, passed away June 28, 2018 in Collierville, TN.Hazel Floyd Goodale was born on August 22, 1927 in Galivants Ferry, SC. She graduated from Aynor High School in Aynor, SC where she was valedictorian and an all-state girls basketball player. She received a bachelor’s degree from Columbia College in Columbia, SC and a master’s degree in education from the University of Memphis.Mrs. Goodale spent her career in education–as a teacher, supervisor and finally as the founding Principal of Farmington Elementary School in Germantown, TN. She had a passion for people, her career and earned numerous awards. She was awarded the Tennessee Distinguished Principal of the Year in 1986 by the U.S. Department of Education, the first from Shelby County to be honored as such. Two years later, under Mrs. Goodale’s leadership, Farmington Elementary was awarded the 1987-88 Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. In 1990 she was awarded Germantown Lion’s Club Citizen of the Year. In 1992 her alma mater, Columbia College, honored her as the recipient of the Wil Lou Gray Educator Award. She was a pioneer in the Special Education field before federal guidelines were enacted and was proud of the innovative programs established at Farmington Elementary School.Mrs. Goodale retired after 31 years with the Shelby County School System. At her retirement celebration, it was reported that she could not stop smiling and expressing how wonderful her experience had been over the years. Mrs. Goodale said, “Thank you for the opportunity. I love you all.”She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society for women educators. She was also a member of Germantown United Methodist Church, where she chaired the Weekday Preschool Council, and was a member of the Mertice Foster Circle and Fellowship Forum Sunday School Class at GUMC.Mrs. Goodale and her beloved husband Gene enjoyed time with family and travel until the time of his death in 2012. They were blessed with three children and five grandchildren. She continued to love life and remained strong in her faith, even as her health declined. She was dearly loved and an inspiration to her family.She is survived by her daughters Rebecca McAlister and Beverly Butler (Tim) and son, James E. Goodale, Jr. (Louise). Her grandchildren, David Goodale, Loran Goodale, Brian Goodale, and Wynn Butler also survive her. She was preceded in death by her husband James E. Goodale in 2012 and granddaughter Rebecca Joy Butler in 2011.The family would like to thank the staff of Schilling Gardens and Crossroads Hospice. Special thanks to Beverly Rhoads, retired Elder Care Health Ministry Coordinator at Germantown United Methodist Church. She was a light to Hazel and Gene during their last years and the family is grateful to her.The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. and funeral services celebrating her life will follow at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 17 at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
