Hattie L. Johnson's Obituary
Hattie Louise Johnson, age 75, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at a local nursing facility. A native of Collierville, TN, and a long-time resident of Memphis, TN, Hattie lived a life full of love, laughter, and devotion to her family and community.
She is survived by her daughter, Ashley M. Frisina-Rainer; her son-in-law, USN CPO Raymond Rainer; her stepson, Darnell Mitchell III (Cedric); her grandsons, Ashton Tyler Frisina (“Bubba”) and Robert Keith Dunn III (“Trey”); and her beloved sister, Rosie Rice. Hattie also leaves behind her former life partner, Darnell Mitchell Jr., and her former son-in-law, Robert K. Dunn Jr., along with a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins who cherish her memory.
She was preceded in death by her former husband, Carl Rayford Johnson, Brothers Willie Brittman, Curtis Brittman, and Ivie Brittman (Margaret Ann), and Sisters Irene (Henry) Lee, and Lillie Bell (Robert) White, and her parents, Bill and CBell Brittman. Born the youngest of seven children, Hattie grew up in Memphis, TN. She graduated from Northside High School in 1968, continuing her education at both Rice College and LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis.
Hattie built a successful career as a mortgage loan specialist and financial banker, working for some of Memphis’s most prominent banks, including UP Bank, Leader Federal, Union Planters, and Regions Bank. Over her 25-year career, she earned numerous promotions, rising to the role of mortgage banker before retiring.
A woman of deep faith, Hattie was a devoted member of Mt. Moriah East Baptist Church under the leadership of Melvin Charles Smith, and later New Life Holiness Baptist Church. She served as a Mother of the Church and was a dedicated community advocate.
Hattie was known for her radiant smile, infectious laughter, impeccable style, and talent for cooking, decorating, and entertaining. She loved bringing people together, whether hosting family gatherings, playing board games, or throwing elaborate parties. She also enjoyed watching Family Feud, exploring garage sales, and thrift shopping.
Hattie faced a decade of health challenges with grace and determination, always holding on to her independent spirit. Even as her strength waned, she never lost her humor, often saying, “Getting old may be a blessing, but it sho ain’t no fun!” She fought with courage until the moment Jesus called her home.
A viewing will be held on Monday, December 23, 2024, from 2:00–3:00 p.m., followed by funeral services from 3:00–4:00 p.m. Both will take place at Memorial Park Funeral Home in Memphis, TN.
In accordance with her family’s wishes, Hattie will be cremated. A repast will follow the funeral service, offering loved ones an opportunity to gather, celebrate her life, and share cherished memories.
Hattie Louise Johnson will be deeply missed, but her legacy of love, faith, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
