Hassell Gordon Smith's Obituary
Hassell Smith, 80, retired auto mechanic, died Tuesday January 12, 2016, at home surrounded by his family. Hassell was born in Memphis, April 18, 1935 the only child of Hassell and Elise Delano Smith. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Mary Virginia Brogdon Smith, 2 children, Gordon (Clerisa), Leigh Anne Frazier (Bill), and he was “Pop” to his 2 grandchildren, Bailey and Cooper Smith. Hassell graduated from Tech High School and worked in the retail drug industry before returning to his first love auto mechanics. He worked at several VW dealerships before retiring in 2000. He was well known for his mechanical ability, often diagnosing problems for friends over the phone. Hassell was a lifelong Episcopalian having served as Jr. Warden and several years on the vestry at Church of the Good Shepherd. Hassell loved his family, his church, fixing things, and dancing. He enjoyed square dance, line dance, and choreographed ballroom dancing. He was a member of Merry-Go-Rounds, Southern Rounds, and Spurs & Saddles clubs. Visitation will be Sunday, January 17th 5 – 7 pm and the funeral will be Monday, January 18th at 1:00 pm at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Avenue.
