Harry Dollahite was a true gentleman, family man, who loved his wife Virginia and was one of the most genuine and friendly people i ever met. Harry was a classic newspaper man from the golden era of newspaper marketing and sales. He once shared with me that he was going to hire me to be his right hand man with the Representative Firm office he managed in Dallas. That office eventually closed and we had the opportunity to hire Harry as a part of our team at The Dallas Morning News. His knowledge, kindness, and practical view of problems was always so refreshing. He shared stories of growing up in Mississippi where his family was so poor he wore pants made out of burlap. Perhaps because of this upbringing Harry was always grateful for everything in his life, including his family, his job and his health. I am blessed to have known Harry and I am absolutely convinced I am a better person today for having known him. Harry lived his life as an example for others, and although he never proclaimed to do that, I admired him enough to emulate him and admire his personal approach to life. God Bless you Harry and blessings to his Family, Virginia and Bert. This may be a tough time for you but time heals all wounds and God has a special place for Harry in his Kingdom. Harry and I worked together at the Dallas Moring News when I was just starting out. Harry, Phil Thompson and I were great friends. Phil and I just loved Harry, who was a great role model for two youngsters starting out in the newspaper business and adult life. In fact, Harry introduced Phil and his wife Dana. Sadly, Phil passed away on September 15. After Phil’s funeral, I went to visit Harry and Virginia at Harry’s retirement home. He looked great, sounded great and had a huge smile on his face. Harry & Virginia became good friends when they arrived at our church in Richardson many long years ago. What fun it was to be around them and to hear Harry’s great laugh and Virginia’s drawl. He was one of the most exuberant men I’ve ever known with such a wonderful love of life. He will be dearly missed.

Uncle Harry Dollahite like Uncle Jimmy Alston brother’s in law as Virginia was Uncle Jimmy’s sister and Harry’s wife were cut from the same cloth. Both were terrific men to know and be kin to. We were all southern’s Uncle Harry is going to be missed. I have known them since way way back in 1950’s when I began to know my relatives on my mother’s side as my grandmother and her sisters were the beginnings of the Cooke, Alston, Dollahite clan. We showed up at Reunions at the cabin of UpYonder and at the Alston house for funerals and burials. We are still a close clan although we are spread out over the countryside. Uncle Harry I will never forget that you were a great husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all you came in contact with. You called all by their first name and knew me and my family well.William (Bill) Cooke of the the Harold G Cooke Jr. and Jane Cooke clan part of the Alston, Dollahite, Cooke Clan.

I married into the Alston family in 1974 and Uncle Harry and Aunt Virginia were always THE people. They both always were friendly, interested, motivated, involved, busy, creative..I just loved them. I think they have embodied marriage- in give and take, love and commitment, through thick and thin they sere so stable. Grandaddy was one of the funniest people I’ve ever known! He pulled pranks on people all the way back in the 1960’s and I wasn’t there to witness those first hand, but they sounded awesome- like standing up an announcing the name of the last train stop when it made it’s second stop- just to panic all he people who had nodded off! Pranking complete strangers= hilarious! When I was little, he LOVED taking pictures of everything. If you were at a party eating hamburgers, he wanted a picture OF YOU actually EATING the burger! We were constantly asked to pose for these pictures! And when he got a video camera…. Good Night! He wanted every video to start with someone announcing the date and time and location and what’s going on… So there is a video, somewhere, of me standing outside of a Grandy’s restaurant in the middle of Arkansas saying “Hi! This is Anne-Marie and I’m at Grandy’s and it’s Tuesday July 3, 1987 and we are on the way to up yonder…” Or something like that! Then when he got to up yonder, he took videos of EVERYTHING! Especially a wooden bird- named Chesterfield- whose wings would spin in the wind on the boat dock… There has to be over an hour of footage of that wooden bird, with Grandaddy saying “there goes old Chesterfield” or “boy look at old Chesterfield now!” And to combine his comedy with his photography, he spent years pranking Uncle Jimmy (aka “The Potentate”) There was this mangy dog who lived somewhere near up yonder and would always roam around the property, driving Uncle Jimmy nuts. Grandaddy started following the dog around and taking pictures of it, eventually even letting it into the house to get a picture of it sitting in Uncle Jimmy’s favorite chair! But he outdid himself the year that he happened to be there and capture that dog hiking it’s leg on the Up Yonder welcome sign!!!!Now those who know me will realize that he was a lot of inspiration for me to always laugh at myself and bring others into my jokes!!! He made me laugh a thousand times and I hope I can share that with you!!!I love you so much, Grandaddy! And I am so proud to be your first grandbaby!!!
