Harriet Stubblefield's Obituary
Harriet Roberts Henderson Stubblefield died unexpectedly on July 4, 2015. She was a resident of Collierville, Tennessee, having moved here within the past few years in order to be near her daughter and granddaughter. Harriet was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, and graduated from Vanderbilt University with both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in psychology. While at Vanderbilt, she met her husband of forty-nine years, Dewey Austin Stubblefield II, who preceded her in death in December 2010. Upon graduation from Vanderbilt, Harriet was a school psychologist for the Houston School District in Houston, Texas. After marrying Austin and moving to Owensboro, Kentucky, she joined the Owensboro School District as a school psychologist. After giving birth to her only child, Harriet became an avid volunteer for areas in which she was passionate. While in Owensboro, she was active in the Junior League, the Episcopal Churchwomen, and she was also instrumental in bringing reading programs to disadvantaged children. Once the Stubblefields relocated to Miami, Florida, Harriet was an active member of the Miami Junior League and a docent at the Lowe Art Museum and Fairchild Gardens. The Stubblefields enjoyed traveling the world and exploring new cultures. Once settled in Collierville, Harriet enjoyed her two garden clubs, Ichibana and Memphis Junior League. Nothing gave Harriet more joy than time spent with her family. She is survived by her much loved daughter and granddaughter, Laura Stubblefield McLemore and Ann Ashford McLemore. Harriet most enjoyed watching and supporting Ann Ashford in her equestrian competitions. Harriet also leaves behind nieces and nephews, her “Forever Friends” group from Jackson, and many friends from Owensboro, Miami, and the Memphis area. Harriet’s memorial service will be Saturday, July 11, at 11:30 a.m. at Memorial Park, 5668 Poplar, Memphis, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
