Harold W. Stephens' Obituary
Dr. Harold W. Stephens, emeritus professor at the University of Memphis, died of old age on February 5, 2013. He was 93 years old. He was a member of the Northeast Optimist Club where he served as Secretary/Treasurer, 1995-1996, and a member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew at the Church of the Holy Communion. Dr. Stephens was a member of the mathematics faculty at Memphis State University for twenty-nine years. Before coming to Memphis State, he was on the faculty at several other institutions, including Ball State, the University of Florida, the University of Tennessee, and Asheville-Biltmore College–now UNC-Asheville– where he served as chairman of the math department. In the early fifties while at UT, he became the first coordinator of the statewide program of mathematics contents sponsored by the Tennessee Teachers of Mathematics. He was involved as director and lecturer in academic year institutes and summer institutes for teachers of secondary school mathematics and college teachers sponsored by the National Science Foundation. This activity continued for many years at colleges and universities in Arkansas, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Previously, he worked at the Merck Institute of Therapeutic Research in the Bio-Physic Lab and for the Gills and Hill Engineering Corp. in New York City. He received his B.S. degree in mathematics and science from Trenton State College in New Jersey where at graduation he was rewarded the highly coveted mathematics prize. His graduate degrees are from Columbia University in New York City. A devoted father and husband, known for his love of family, his Church, and for all animals who strayed into his life, Dr. Stephens is survived by his daughter, Diana Bresinger, son-in-law Charles Bresinger, and two grand-children, Aaron and Rachel. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Communion in Memphis, Tennessee with entombment in the mausoleum at Memorial Park, on Thursday, February 7, 2013. The family requests that any memorials go to the Memphis Humane Society.
