My father, Harl Dean Pierce, passed away Tuesday from natural causes at the age of 87. He is survived by his wife Nellye and sister Lila. He also leaves behind three children; Natalie, Karen, and myself (Dan). Further he leaves behind two step children; Nancy and Susan. There are nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Dad was loved by all. He always had what is now called emotional intelligence which made him a talented sales person and a shrewd card player. He could tell if you were buying or bluffing. And he could tell if you were honest. He would graciously forgive and overlook your dishonesty or other shortcomings but he knew. Because of this some would mistake him for a fool but people often see grace this way. He held no grudges and was always ready to leave the past in the past.
He also always intuitively and steadily believed in God and God's abiding love. Because he was always right about people I am certain he was right about that too.
Dad was a tremendous athlete. He made the roster of the Washington Senators when he was 20 years old. Before he could put on the uniform though he was drafted into the Army. This helped end his baseball career but, as I said, he held no grudge or bitterness. Into his late 70s if you played golf with him you were likely to lose money. Similar to how he lived he would hit the ball straight and true even if it did not go far.
Even though we were very different he loved me as steadfastly and faithfully as anyone ever has. And I hope that I carry that forward to the people in my life.
