Gynette Bennett's Obituary
Gynette Oliver Bennett died at Kirby Pines Manor on December 22, 2016 in Memphis, TN. She was 93 years old. Mrs. Bennett was born on August 6, 1923 in Cayce, Kentucky to Arch and Ethel Oliver. She and her twin sister Lynette were the youngest of nine children. Gynette and Lynette were inseparable throughout their lives. They graduated together from Cayce High School with honors in 1941 and moved to Memphis to attend Draughon Business College. It was while attending St. Paul’s Methodist Church in mid-town Memphis that she met James Milton Bennett. They were married in the church on June 21,1947. Gynette was a homemaker, a Secretary at Saint Paul’s Methodist Church and President Of the Rozelle Elementary School PTA. She was active in the Methodist Church, serving as a leader in the Women’s Society of Christian Service and helping out as needed. Several years later, she became the Financial Secretary of Christ United Methodist Church on Poplar Avenue. She served for twenty years as Assistant to the pastoral ministries of Dr. Charles W. Grant, Dr. Harold Beaty, and Dr. Maxie Dunham. Her husband Milton also joined the staff of Christ UMC as Manager of Maintenance. Gynette and Milton worked and lived together, side by side, for their marriage of 53 years. They were separated by death when Milton died April 10, 2005. Mrs. Bennett is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Rev. Dr. Myra Bennett and James Jongewaard, her son and daughter-in-law, John Miles Bennett and Kathy Wicker Bennett; three grandchildren and five great-children. She is preceded in death by all of her brothers and sisters. Mrs. Bennett will be buried in a private graveside service on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at 11:30 AM with a brief visitation beginning at 11:00 AM.
