Gretchen Jones' Obituary
Gretchen Jones, 91, passed away August 30, 2018. Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her parents, Lida McCoy Philbeck and Ben F. Philbeck, her brother Dr. Ben Philbeck, Jr., and by her husband of 41 years, Clyde Wayne Jones. She is survived by her children, Debra Owen of Germantown, Wayne Jones (Elizabeth) of Boynton Beach, FL, Keith Jones (Rebecca) of Germantown. In addition, she is beloved by her four grandchildren: Rachel, Benjamin, Daniel, and Christopher. After graduating from Central High School in Memphis, Mrs. Jones attended Mars Hill College in NC for two years where she met the love of her life, Clyde Wayne Jones. At Wake Forest University, Gretchen was the 1949 May Queen. After graduating from Wake Forest and marrying her sweetheart, she taught at Guthrie Elementary. Later she taught English at Trinity Elementary, Memphis Preparatory School, and with the Memphis City Schools at Snowden until her retirement in 1992. She enjoyed serving as a volunteer tutor at Dunbar Elementary for a number of years. She also served as an office volunteer at Trinity Baptist Church through the age of 89. Mrs. Jones will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend whose strong faith in the Lord Jesus Christ sustained and guided her. Memorials may be sent to Trinity Baptist Church of Cordova where she was a charter member. A Celebration of Life service will be held Sunday, September 2 at 3:30 p.m. Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home at 5668 Poplar Ave., Memphis, TN.
