Dr. Gregory Stanfill's Obituary
Gregory Waddell Stanfill, D.V.M. a long time Memphis resident, passed away on March 2, 2018 at home surrounded by his family. He was 69 years old and died of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). No one could have fought this disease any harder or with a better attitude. He will be remembered for his calm demeanor. He was very quiet, yet he was always able to get his point across. He was dearly loved by all his family, and his pets loved him as much as he loved them. Gregory was born on August 25, 1948, in Memphis to Coy and Helen Stanfill. He graduated Kingsbury High School in 1966. He completed his pre-veterinary studies at University of Tennessee from 1966-1968, and then studied veterinary medicine at Auburn University from 1968 -1972. There he met his wife, Jean. The couple moved back to Memphis in 1972 to practice Veterinary Medicine. In 1979, he opened Frayser Raleigh Animal Hospital which he operated for 32 years. He added Greene Animal Hospital (2001 – 2011) and Houston Levee Animal Hospital (2005 – 2014) to his business. He was a member of the professional societies the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association, and the Memphis Shelby County Veterinary Association. He was a man of faith and a member of Hope Presbyterian Church. He loved to exercise, run races and completed one-half marathon and two full marathons. He loved sports, specifically University of Memphis basketball, the Grizzlies, his beloved St. Louis Cardinals, and Auburn football! Gregory is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jean Hayman Stanfill, daughter Susan Hayman Stanfill, grandchildren (Lily Shannon ) and (Dylan Shannon) and son Dr. John Gregory Stanfill (Dr. Ansley Grimes Stanfill). He also leaves a brother, Barry Wesley Stanfill of San Francisco, California, his mother Helen Shinault Glasscock of Memphis, TN, and a beloved uncle, Gene Stanfill of Jackson, Tennessee. Greg was preceded in death by his father Coy Wesley Stanfill and by his stepfather Clyde Bert Glasscock, Sr. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, March 6 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. with the funeral service to follow immediately at 1:00 p.m. All services will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery. The family would like to thank the ALS West Tennessee Support Group, and Crossroads Hospice for their excellent team and loving care.
