Grant Chelsey Madsen Jr.'s Obituary
Our family’s hero Grant Chesley Madsen, Jr. age 96 of Memphis, TN, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 16th in Memphis. Grant was born in Soda Springs, Idaho on June 8, 1929, to Grant and Lorette Madsen. After graduating from Grand Junction High School in 1946, he served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and later in the Air Force National Guard. At 23, he married the love of his life Doris Virginia Christenbury (Madsen). While working as a surveyor in Memphis he attended Christian Brothers College, Memphis State University, and University of Tennessee Memphis where he majored in Civil Engineering and received his engineering certification in 1959. Grant had a successful career as an engineer for the City of Memphis during which he designed many of the city’s bridges, interchanges and roadways; after retirement, he operated his own firm Madsen Engineering until his retirement at 85 years of age.
Grant was an elder of Evergreen Presbyterian Church and a boy scout leader who shared his skills as an avid fisherman and outdoorsman with Memphis youth. His devoted wife Doris was also his dancing and bowling partner. His memories are cherished by his children Lorraine Buckley and Trey (Grant III) Madsen, grandchildren Crystal Dawn Buckley and Chesley (Grant IV) Madsen, and great grandchildren Hannah Lail Petty, Christian Lail, and Jordan Lail. Grant was preceded in death by his wife Doris, his eldest daughter Gail Dodd Lail and grandson David Lail.
Join us as we celebrate Grant’s life: visitation Friday evening, Oct 24, and funeral services Saturday afternoon Oct 25 at Memorial Park Funeral Home (call 901-472-8735 for times). Graveside service will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family requests any memorial donations be sent to the Engineers Club Scholarship Fund at the University of Memphis.
