Grady W. Agee's Obituary
GRADY WHITMAN AGEE, 87, passed away August 26, 2011 at Baptist Memorial Hospital – Memphis. He was born October 7, 1923 in Muscle Shoals, AL to Edwin Floyd and Jessie Mae Agee. He was predeceased by his older brother, Edwin, who died in April of this year. He spent the majority of his youth in the Shiloh National Military Park where he gave tours while his mom worked as a clerk. He said he had a 4,000 acre backyard where he fished, hunted and swam. It was at Shiloh where he met the girl he would marry over 20 years later. He graduated from the Shiloh School where he was voted Senior Class President. Mr. Agee served in the U.S. Marine Corps enlisting in November 1941. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action in the battle for Guam. He graduated from both The University of Tennessee – Knoxville and The University of Tennessee – College of Law in 1950 where he was a member of Kappa Sigma and served as Grand Treasurer for four years. He was also voted Most Eligible Bachelor at UT in 1948 by the student body. Mr. Agee started his law practice in 1950 with Nelson Norville. He later was a founding partner with Rickey, Shankman, Agee, & Harpster Law Firm. He later practiced law with his son, Mike for several years. Mr. Agee was a member of the old Yuletide Revelers, the Lions Club of Memphis where he served as Secretary, the Kiwanis Club of Bartlett where he served as President and the Memphis Bar Association serving on the Board of Directors representing the Real Estate Section. He was a longtime member of Colonial Country Club and Second Presbyterian Church. He and his wife were the first couple married in what is now known as the Russell Chapel at Second Presbyterian. Mr. Agee is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty Barlow Agee; sons, Whit Agee (Diana) and Mike Agee (Amy); and grandchildren, Lindsey, Zach, Kendall, Ryan, Marianne, and Sam. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Sunday, August 28 and funeral services will be 11:30 a.m., Monday, August 29 at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Forever Young Senior Wish Organization, P.O. Box 1381, Collierville, TN 38027-1381, the University of Tennessee College of Law or the Shiloh National Military Park.
