Gloria Janet Hollie's Obituary
Mrs. Gloria Janet Hollie passed away on 17 July 2024, at her apartment in Fort Worth, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents Mr. and Mrs. William Hartwell Puryear, her sister Anne Otts and two of three sons, LtCol James Franklin Hollie, USAF Retired, and William Lee Hollie.
Mrs. Hollie is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, LtCol Lawrence Lee Hollie, USAF Retired, one son Chief Petty Officer Andrew Brian Hollie, USN Retired, one brother William Hartwell Puryear Jr., seven grandchildren Crystal, Brandon, Trenton, Nicholas, Joplin, Emma, Morgan, two great grandchildren Bennett and Ruby, plus numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. She was a member of Bellevue Baptist Church.
Gloria was a tremendous asset for her husband during his lengthy military career. She was able to take the many moves directed by the Air Force with a minimum of turmoil for the family and set up new homes at their new location. In the later portion of her husband’s career, Gloria joined the US Government’s civil service work force. Despite having to start over every time she had to move, she eventually worked her way up and retired after 31 years of civil service as a GS-11.
After her retirement, Gloria volunteered her time to help with local children. She was a mentor to Kindergarteners at the local elementary, as well as chaperoning field trips. When Bellevue Baptist Church developed their Rise to Read Program, she was among the first to volunteer to help elementary aged children with their reading problems. She enjoyed reading to the children, reading with them, and listening to them read. They just loved her, and she adored them.
Her family was her priority. Nothing came before her husband and children. She was also good friends with numerous people outside her immediate family. She will be greatly missed.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, August 10 at 12:00 p.m. with a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. all in the Fireside Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN, 38119. (901) 767-8930.
