Gilbert Ira Austin's Obituary
Gilbert Ira Austin of Arlington TN passed away peacefully in his home on January 6, 2023 at the age of 96. Mr. Austin was a WWII Marine Veteran who served in the Pacific on the USS Lexington.
Mr. Austin was very strong in his Christian Faith and was a former member of Beverly Hills Baptist Church and Cherokee Baptist Church. He was a devoted Deacon and Mentor of Beverly Hills Church and taught men’s Sunday School for over 30 years.
Mr. Austin worked at Sears Roebuck for 33 years before retiring. Mr. Austin then went to work at Foxgate Lincoln Mercury and ten (10) years in a row was salesman of the year. Mr. Austin worked at Schilling until retirement at 84. He also said the job he loved the most was driving the Sears truck around Memphis, because he knew every “nook and cranny” in Memphis. Gil always knew someone everywhere he went.
In his younger years, Mr. Austin spent time golfing, bowling, and singing the gospel with his brother, Tony Austin.
Mr. Austin is survived by a son, Steve Austin; a daughter Martha Langston (Donnie); four grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren along with two cats, Miss Kitty and Barn Cat. Mr. Austin was reunited in heaven with his wife Jennie, his parents, his son (Ralph), his daughter (Sue) and brother (Tony).
There will be a graveside service Saturday January 14th at 12 noon at Memorial Park Funeral Home (Poplar Avenue).
