Georgia Strain Harkins' Obituary
Georgia Strain Harkins, 77, died on June 1, 2021, at Kirby Pines Retirement Center. Born in Memphis on August 21, 1943, Georgia graduated from Immaculate Conception High School. She was voted class president, class favorite, May Queen and Miss I.C. She attended Sienna College and received her Bachelor and Master’s degrees from the University of Memphis. Georgia taught at St. Dominic’s School and had a long career as a tutor for many children.
She was married to Dr. John Harkins and helped edit his many historical books. She was active in the West Tennessee Historical Society.
Georgia was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John Harkins, her son, William Michael Harkins, her parents, Ella and Dr. Jerry Weems, and her brothers, Walter P. Strain and Dr. Tom Weems.
She is survived by her sisters, Carla Strain Williams, Beth Weems Bradley, Kathy Weems Hughes, and Mimi Weems McCallum, as well as her brothers, Dr. Joseph Weems and Dr. John Weems.
A graveside service for family will be held on Wednesday, June 9, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery. A memorial service honoring Georgia Harkins will be held in the chapel at the Kirby Pines Retirement Community on Thursday, June 10, 2021, at 10:00 a.m.
