George Arthur Williams' Obituary
George Arthur Williams, 95, passed away at Morning Pointe Assisted Living Center in Brentwood, TN of natural causes on Saturday February 2, 2019. He was born on the morning of May 23, 1923 to Annabelle and William Edward Williams, Sr. in Memphis, TN. He was preceded in death by his wife and soulmate of 62 years, Jeanne Strickling Williams.He graduated from Memphis Tech High School in 1941. Subsequently, he volunteered for military service and achieved the rank of second lieutenant, earning his wings in the Army Air Corp during WWII. After the war he attended Memphis State University- Southern Law University and passed the bar in 1949, becoming a licensed attorney in 1950. With partner Jack Gillespie, they developed a successful insurance agency, Executive Underwriters, operating for several decades in Memphis and Denver area. He was an active member of St. Louis Catholic Church for over 55 years coaching baseball and basketball, working the hole-in-one tournament and attending daily mass. He was past-president of the St. Louis Men’s Club, Ave Maria Home and Sub Centers, a national society of underwriting brokers.He loved all sports playing basketball, baseball and running track in high school once running 9.9 seconds in the 100 yard dash. He later played handball in the Memphis Handball Association. He had a lifelong passion for flying and aviation. Additionally, he was member of Windyke Country Club, playing golf for over 50 years and highlighted by shooting 72 at age 72. He exercised his whole life and was a runner for many years, jogging into his early nineties.George was honest as the day was long, never had a bad word for others and was well liked by anyone who met him. He was a wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and most of all, a loving human being. We are extremely blessed for his presence in our lives and the light he enkindled in our hearts. Keep that light burning, dear George, until we meet and embrace again. You have fought the good fight, finished the course, kept the faith and received the crown of righteousness for a life well lived! We love you immeasurably.He is survived his children Rhonda Williams Travis (Kenny), Mark Williams (Jeanne), and James Williams (Annette). His grandchildren include Karen Travis Gergel (Mike), Katherine Travis Coy (Steve), Alex Williams, Austin Williams, Claire Williams and Emma Williams. His great grandchildren are Travis Coy and Gabriel Coy. His sister-in-law is Jeanette Williams and a niece, Donna Williams, of Norman, OK.Visitation will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Thursday, February 7th from 5:00 – 8:00pm with the rosary at 7:00pm.
