Dr. George S. Minmier's Obituary
George Samuel Minmier, Ph.D. Dr. George Minmier, 76, of Germantown, died July 1, 2010 at Methodist Hospital-Germantown. Visitation will be Tuesday, July 6 at Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, July 7 at 1 p.m. at Memorial Park, with graveside services to be held afterward at same. Dr. Minmier was a native of Paris, Arkansas and graduated from the University of Arkansas with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. He joined the US Navy in 1956 and served on the USS Intrepid and later, the VW-4 Air Squadron (Hurricane Hunters) as a supply officer. After an honorable discharge, George worked as an accountant for a number of Fortune 500 companies and earned his M.B.A. from Southern Methodist University in Dallas in 1963. In 1967, George pursued his Ph.D. in Accounting at the University of Arkansas and later accepted a position with Georgia State University in Atlanta. He completed his doctorial dissertation while there; working with state officials on a budgeting model called “Zero Based Budgeting”. Jimmy Carter was the Governor of Georgia at the time, and George’s work became a part of Carter’s presidential initiatives. In 1979 George joined the University of Memphis as an Accounting Professor. He received his CPA and CMA certificates at this time. It was in Memphis that he met and subsequently married his sweetheart, the former Jean Ellis McGregor in 1990. George was recognized as an outstanding professor. At Georgia State, he was awarded the Outstanding Teacher Award Phi Chi Theta for Business Students. At the University of Memphis he was awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award, Honorary Faculty Member Golden Key International Honor Fraternity, the University of Memphis Outstanding Faculty Award given by Mortar Board, Fogelman College of Business & Economics Teaching Fellowship, and the Suzanne Downs Palmer Professorship for teaching. George was committed to his beloved Beta Alpha Psi and was the longest serving faculty advisor in the international honors fraternity. His involvement spanned 30 years, including a number of years as a Regional Director and member of the Board of Directors. George was awarded the McGladrey & Pullen/BAP Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award two separate times. George was a wonderful and devoted father, grandfather and husband. He and Jean enjoyed traveling and taking cruises. An enthusiastic dancer, he frequented the former Summit Club “hug dancing” or jitterbugging with Jean. Dr. Minmier is survived by his wife, Jean; daughter, Karen Minmier Roseberry and her husband, Greg of Grayson, Georgia, daughter, Debbie McGregor Good and her husband, Jeff of Jackson, Mississippi; a brother, James G. Minmier of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; and grandchildren, Samantha (Sam) Trammel and Ryne Roseberry, and Caroline (Carly) Good and Alexandra (Alex) Good. The family requests that memorials be made to the Elder Care Ministry Fund of Germantown United Methodist Church.
