George Mensi's Obituary
George Mensi, born in Pietra Marazzi, Alessandria, Italy, March 31, 1934, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 18, 2023 in Memphis, TN.
He was preceded in death by his parents Frank E. and Delfina Mensi, brothers, F. John Mensi, Peter Mensi, and Silvio Mensi, and his sister-in-law, Josephine Mensi. He is survived by his brother, Joseph Mensi Sr., who was also his caregiver, former business partner, and best friend. Also surviving are his sisters-in-law, Mary Frances Mensi and Carolyn Mensi. He also leaves 8 nieces and nephews whom he loved as his own, Ann Marie Paccasassi (Mike), Jeanie Smith (Mark), David Mensi (Jennifer), Dianne Reed (Howard), Frank Mensi, Della Lapuente (Mike), Virginia Coker (Dennis), and Joseph Mensi Jr., and a host of great- and great-great- nieces and nephews.
George was a jeweler’s apprentice in Italy in his late teens. He came to the United States at the age of 21 and soon thereafter began working as a jewelry technician at Endicott Jewelers in downtown Memphis, TN. After decades with Endicott, he and his brother, Joe, ventured out on their own establishing Mensi’s Jewelers in East Memphis where they offered jewelry repair and custom made jewelry. The brothers were known for their high standards, hard work, and superior craftsmanship and took great pride in their work. George retired in 2018 at the age of 84. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing, and spending time on the family farm. Above all, George loved his family, who will fondly cherish his memory.
The family will receive friends from 9:00 am until the Funeral Mass begins at 10:00 am Monday, March 27, 2023 at St. Michael Catholic Church, 3863 Summer Ave., Memphis, TN. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave., Memphis, TN.
