George Richard Marston's Obituary
George Marston passed away peacefully on January 1, 2025, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was a devoted husband to Debby and a loving father to his sons, Bob (Sheila) and John Marston (Kim), and his step-children, Scott Craig (Andrea) and Kathryn Craig. George was also a cherished grandfather to Bo Poppelreiter (Heather), April Whitmore (Randle), Andy (Mindy), Adam (Kristy), Ryan (Ashley), Matthew and John Marston, Jr., and Mason Craig, and a great-grandfather to Grant, Anna, Landon, Chloe, Scarlett, Aiden, and Liam Marston.
George was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia, his father, Charles Richard, and his brother, Jim Marston. He is survived by his brothers, Charles (Roxie) and Robin Marston.
George began working with South Central Bell as a lineman at age 18 and retired at age 55 after working his way up to first line supervisor in construction. In retirement, he started doing handyman work under the title “Puttering for Profit”, but that evolved into “Marston and Marston Home Improvement” after his eldest son Bob joined in the work. This business combined George’s passion for working with his hands and helping others. He and Bob focused on building ramps and remodeling home interiors for the disabled. George was a very skilled woodworker. He built everything from foot stools to bookcases. His legacy lives on in the pieces he created. George was also an avid reader and history buff. In his later years, you could find him in his study/office surrounded by books (mostly non-fiction) watching the birds and squirrels outside his window, or maybe assembling a model, and most recently, working with his colored pencils.
George served his Lord faithfully in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church as an elder, clerk of the session, Sunday School and Bible Study teacher, and servant leader in many other ways. His love for and study of scripture led to his unconditional acceptance of all of God's people and his passion for serving them in every way possible. George and Debby were a team in leadership and mission, and he loved his family deeply.
All who encountered George were witness to his light and the presence of God within him.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Germantown at 2385 Riverdale Road, Germantown, Tennessee. Visitation and fellowship begin at 2:00pm with the formal service to start at 3:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Room in the Inn—Memphis or the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Germantown.
