George Michael Makris' Obituary
George Michael Makris, born October 13, 1933, passed away Monday, September 3rd. He was the son of the late Mary and Michael Makris of Memphis. He was a graduate of Memphis State University and received a law degree from Southern Law School. He served in the U.S. Navy on the aircraft carrier Bon Homme Richard then later returned to his law practice. George was known in Memphis to be an avid tennis player, but enjoyed many outdoor pursuits, such as golf, hiking, gardening and fishing. The love and devotion to both of his parents during their many years of illness defined the special nature of his caring. Integrity was a hallmark of his character. He is survived by two sisters, Evangeline Gouvas of Atlanta and Sophie Sousoulas of Memphis, and a brother in law, Jim Sousoulas, also of Memphis. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who loved him and will miss him. George was a member of The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, where he was very involved and served on the church board for many years. His special request was that any gift of remembrance be, in lieu of flowers, a donation to The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church on Highland. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday September 5, 2012 at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, September 6, 2012 at The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church on Highland. Interment will follow the church service in Memorial Park Cemetery. George, we are grateful for all our shared moments.
