George C. Grugett's Obituary
George Carroll Grugett, 91, passed from this life on July 18, 2016. George was born on March 7, 1925 in McConnell, TN the second child of Martha and Paul Grugett. George, or Buddy as the family knew him, was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Judge Billy Grugett and Bobby Grugett. George attended school in Dyersburg for the first 11 years and graduated in 1942 from Byars Hall High School in Covington, TN. George served with the 12th Air Force as an Army Air Corps Bomber Pilot in World War II from 1943-1945, flying 47 successful combat missions in the European Theater. After the war George attended The University of Alabama and The University of Mississippi. Following college he joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Memphis, TN and began a 35 year career. After retiring from the Corps in 1980, George was selected as Executive Vice President of the Mississippi Valley Flood Control Association, where he served another 33 years. George has received numerous awards for his public service including the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, presented by the Secretary of the Army, and the Silver Order of the de Fleury Medal, presented by the Commanding General, US Army Corps of Engineers. On August 20, 2013 the Corps of Engineers formally christened its newest vessel, the Motor Vessel George C. Grugett, in honor of Mr. Grugett’s decades of service to the Corps and the nation. George Grugett is survived by his sisters Martha Paul Winford, Beverly Grugett, and Judy Murray (Rufner); three sons Michael, Blake (Bill Young), and Gregory (Dianne). George also has three grandchildren Wendy Michael (Danny), Douglas Grugett (Katie), and Dustin Gentry and seven grandchildren, Eli, Maddie and Sam Michael, Ezra and George Grugett, and Landon and Tatum Gentry. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday, July 22 at Memorial Park Funeral Home. His funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 23 also at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
