George R. Douglas' Obituary
George Robert Douglas, age 83, died peacefully at home on September 10, 2018, following a lengthy illness. George was graduate of Christian Brothers High School, and received degrees in both engineering and liberal arts from the University of Notre Dame. After graduation from college, he was employed by Colgate Palmolive before joining his father in George R. Douglas and Associates. Following the death of his beloved father, George was President of the company for many years prior to retirement. He was pleased to welcome his sons George and Paul to continue the business. A member of St. Louis Catholic Church for over 50 years, he had served as Lector and a member of Perpetual Adoration. George had been on the boards of Ave Maria Home and St. Peter’s Manor, was a past President of the Serra Club, and was inducted into the Christian Brothers Hall of Fame. A highly organized, efficient, and private man, George like to relax by reading, playing golf, lounging by his pool, and playing with his grandchildren. He was the perfect gentleman. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Elsa Douglas. He leaves his devoted wife of 58 years, Marguerite James Douglas, whom he had known since they were classmates in seventh grade. Cherishing his memory are his five children, Alice D. Pian (Maurice), George Douglas (Lynn), David Douglas, Paul Douglas (Miller), and Marguerite D. Heindel (Cory). He will be missed by his eleven grandchildren, Maurice and Alice Pian, George, Hannah, James, Blanch, Kay, John Paul, and William Douglas, and Addie and Bodhi Heindel; and his sister-in-law, Julia James. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to his caregivers, Ruby Owens and Cathy Johnson, and to the wonderful team from Methodist Hospice. Visitation will be Saturday, September 15 from 2 until 3 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home with funeral service to follow at 3 p.m. A private burial will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery.
