George Calvin Chumney's Obituary
George Calvin Chumney, 82, of Memphis, TN, died Friday, August 14, 2009, at Baptist Memorial Hospital.Born August 6, 1927, in Arlington, TN, he was the son of the late George M. and Callie Mae Chumney. He attended Messick High School in Memphis until he joined the United States Navy at the age of 17. A veteran of World War II, he served as a radioman on the U.S.S. Philippine Sea. After his discharge, he married Annabelle Smith on December 24, 1948. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year. They have been longtime members of White Station Church of Christ where he served as a deacon. He attended the University of Tennessee at Memphis and became a Certified Public Accountant in 1959. He was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants.He is survived by his wife Annabelle S. Chumney and his two sons, Robert Calvin (Janis) Chumney of Memphis, TN, and George David (Susan) Chumney of Georgetown, KY. Additional survivors include four grandchildren, Laura K. Chumney of Memphis, TN, Sarah R. Chumney of Knoxville, TN, Christine K. Chumney of Memphis, TN, and Andrew D. Chumney of Tucson, AZ, a great grandson William Thomas Peacock, of Memphis, TN., and two sisters, Edith Russell of Memphis, TN, and Melba Easterwood of Southaven, MS.He was preceded in death by his brother James Chumney of Memphis, TN, and his sister Mary Murphy of Nashville, TN.Visitation will be Monday, August 17, from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at Memorial Park Funeral Home, and a funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 18, at 2:00 P.M. at White Station Church of Christ.
