George E. Alton's Obituary
George E. Alton Jr., 84, passed away on December 2, 2018. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara Ann Alton, son, Chad Edward Alton, daughter, Keely Burton, granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Damol, sister, Judy Peterson. He was born to George and Jewyl (Gray) Alton on February 4, 1934 in Pipestone, Minnesota Where he was raised and received his education. He graduated from Pipestone Highschool in June of 1952. George attended The University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in June of 1956. While attending The University, George participated in the Air Force ROTC program. He entered the Air Force as a Second Lt. in August of 1956. While in the Air Force, he completed one year of navigation training and six months of Radar Observer training. He was assigned to the 54th Fighter Squadron, Ellsworth Air Force Base, Rapid City, South Dakota. He served for a year and a half as a crew member in Jet Interceptor Aircraft. In June of 1962 he joined the 124th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Iowa Air National Guard, Des Moines Iowa. He served in this Squadron for 23 years as a Crew member and Accounting and Finance Officer. He retired from the unit in 1986 as a Lt. Colonel. He joined the Principal Financial Group (formerly Bankers Life Co.), in Des Moines, Iowa in May 1965. He worked in the Investment department for 33 years and retired in March of 1998 as a Second Vice President.Arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave., Memphis, TN 38119 (901) 767-8930. “Celebrating Life… Behind the Stone Wall”.
