Geneva Phillips Angle's Obituary
Geneva Phillips Angle, age 98, passed away peacefully in the early hours of July 22, 2023 at NHC Somerville where she was in assisted living. Geneva was born in 1924 near Whiteville, TN. She grew up on a farm in a big family of four brothers and lots of aunts, uncles and cousins.
Geneva Angle is predeceased by her husband of almost 50 years, Owen Angle, her parents Charles and Velma Phillips and her brothers Ellis Phillips, Hal Phillips, Charles Phillips and Floyd Phillips.
Geneva is survived by her daughters Carol Angle Sills of Belmont NC, Julie Angle Steiner (Mitch) of Oak Island, NC, and Laurie Angle Butler (Steve) of Somerville TN. Geneva is survived by her grandchildren Holly Dawson Owen (Paul), and Will Dawson of Charlotte, NC. Two great grandchildren, and an extended family as well as nephews, nieces and cousins also survive her.
Geneva was a long time employee of the Baptist Brotherhood Commission in Memphis, TN., where she worked for more than 30 years as Financial Services Director. She valued and enjoyed her time there and missed the wonderful people that were her co-workers.
In retirement, Geneva was busy and socially active. She studied art history and became a docent at the Brooks Art Gallery. She played bridge with several groups, and was a member and officer of both Quota (a club for professional business women) and the Gavel club. She took adult courses at Rhodes. She loved to travel as often as she could with family, friends and club members. She went to yoga classes and walked her dog in the Evergreen Historical district. She traveled to locations all across the US from Alaska to Maine as well as many foreign countries. Geneva loved the beach and was happiest when sitting under an umbrella near the ocean with a book to read.
She attended McClean Baptist Church with her family for many years and later Geneva attended First Baptist.
Geneva lived a full and complete life. She was a tough, funny, intelligent, feisty, independent, self-made woman who had a great life and many friends. She loved her family. She loved her church. She loved her friends. She enjoyed her home. She always wanted to know “what’s going on in the world?”
She will be sorely missed.
A big heartfelt thanks go to the wonderful staff of NHC Healthcare in Somerville TN for their excellent care of Geneva during her stay and to the caring staff of Crossroad’s Hospice for guiding her care in her transition.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at 2:00pm in the Fireside Chapel at Memorial Park Funeral Home. The family will receive friends for visitation an hour prior to the service starting at 1:00pm. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Southwood's Cemetery
