He allowed me to become a law clerk with his firm in 1969 and I practiced with him from 1972-74 when I came back home to Jonesboro, Arkansas because of family obligtions. He gave me the best advice about how to conduct myself in Court and I did get a chance to tell him that decades later. He was known to handle the hardest cases in the firm and I admired his poise and composure and especially his voice. He had a nice laugh that came to his eyes before it broke a smile. He looked the way a lawyer should look and anyone he represented was lucky. I think of him with deep regard and affection. John V. Phelps
Mr. Wilson’s firm was my first employer when I graduated from law school and Tim Ryan, Cecil Smith and I (William Gotten) vied for offices in the Lincoln American Tower. I got the library until Buford Wells was elected General Sessions Judge and to my great delight, got his corner office. During my tenure with the firm, Mr. Wilson was always very considerate to us young lawyers who were privileged to train at the feet of some very fine lawyers. I very much admired his courtesy and punctuality. Fred Wilson was one of those “lawyer’s lawyer,” when lawyers get together and remember mentors with whom they practiced and I will remember him fondly.William M. Gotten
