Frank David Ferguson, Sr.'s Obituary
FERGUSON SR, FRANK DAVID, 83, of Memphis, TN was called home to eternity on November 14, 2018 to be with time forever. Proceeded in death by his parents George Neill Ferguson, Sr and Lois Bennett Ferguson of Memphis, TN as well as his brother George Neill Ferguson, Jr of Atlanta, GA. He is survived by his sons Frank David Ferguson, Jr and his wife Kandace of Bartlett, TN, Joseph Neill Bennett Ferguson and his wife Laura of St. Petersburg, FL as well as three grandchildren, Sophia, Luke and Samuel and a host of other loving family members and friends. Born in Memphis, TN, Frank became a great baseball player, playing two years for the American Legion. He was a great student, earning a scholarship to U of Tennessee Knoxville for electrical engineering. After UT Frank attended U of Cincinnati where he earned a B.S. in architecture. Frank was a proud Sigma Alpha Epsilon brother and lifelong contributor to his college fraternity. After college he went on to work for various architectural firms before landing a job with Holiday Inn’s international division in the 1960s where he designed hotels all over Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He loved to travel and lived in many different places such as London, Brussels and Istanbul among others. After Holiday Inn Frank became the Director of the Architectural Division for London based Occidental Petroleum. After Occidental he opened his own architectural firm in the early 70s designing many structures in Memphis and the Mid-South that are still operational today. He did a lot of design work for the Memphis Zoo. In fact, the birdhouse at the zoo hasn’t changed a day since it was built based on Frank’s design in 1974. In the 80s he went to work for Shoney’s South, Inc. where he designed many concepts that are still in operation today. Frank then went on to work for the US Corp of Engineers Memphis District for 21 years until his retirement in 2008. After retirement he helped at his sons’ businesses, Memphis Judo & Jiu-Jitsu and Memphis Fitness Kickboxing building shelving, benches, mat framing, etc. He loved history, Memphis Tigers basketball, golf, backgammon, the Cincinnati Reds and his favorite…chocolate ice cream. Frank also loved to generously donate and did so monthly to various charities such as the Memphis Union Mission, American Diabetes Association, St Jude, AmVets as well as many others. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you donate to the Memphis Union Mission. Visitation will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Monday, November 26, 2018 from 12 pm – 2 pm.
