Mrs. Frances Fanning's Obituary
FRANCES NEAL FANNING, 88, of Germantown, Tennessee, died after a brief illness at Germantown Methodist Hospital, Monday, October 25, 2010. Mrs. Fanning is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Fanning Hollingsworth, and son, David Neal Fanning, both of Germantown; her sisters Pearl Neal Watt of Denton, TX, and Mae Neal Planchard Moak of Summitt, MS; her grandchildren, Karen Wynn Hollingsworth, of New York, NY, Kathryn Hollingsworth Ganske of Atlanta, GA, Jonathan David Fanning of the Dumfries, VA, and Amanda Fanning Widner of Knoxville, TN; and her great-grandchildren, Lela McKinley Ganske of Atlanta, GA and Ian Hollingsworth Davis of New York, NY. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Paul Harold Fanning; her parents, Jesse Monroe Neal, and Maggie Gunnell Neal; and her brothers, Oscar Harold Neal and William James Neal. Mrs. Fanning spent her early years in her native Lincoln County, Mississippi. She graduated from Ruth High School where, despite her diminutive stature, she was an enthusiastic basketball player. After graduating from Copiah-Lincoln Junior College she moved to Memphis to participate in the war effort as one of the celebrated “Rosie the Riveters.” It was at the Fisher Aircraft plant that she met her husband while they were both working on producing B-17 airplanes. Mrs. Fanning will long be remembered as an excellent homemaker, cook and gardener, and, even more, as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. The family will receive visitors from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, Thursday evening at Memorial Park Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 2:30 pm, at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
