Fay Sanford's Obituary
Fay Tullos Sanford went to be with her Lord on December 18 after a courageous four year battle with cancer. She was born on June 11, 1946 in Greenwood, MS and grew up in Pace, MS, the daughter of W.T. Jr. and Maxine Smith Tullos. She attended the University of Mississippi where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. Upon graduation from Ole Miss in 1968, she taught English at Rosedale, MS High School. After moving to Memphis, she worked at Baptist Memorial Hospital as a visiting hostess. Fay was a devoted wife to her husband of 40 years, Dr. Jack Carter Sanford, a wonderful homemaker for her family, and a caring friend. Fay was an excellent gardener who eagerly shared her passion and skill with many. She regularly opened her lovely garden, Boxwood Acres, to benefit many garden associations in Memphis and the United States. Although her appreciation and knowledge of formal topiary gardening was quite sophisticated, Fay’s humble and generous spirit permeated all of her gardening activities, indeed all of her life. She was an active member of Second Presbyterian Church, where she served on the Chancel Guild. She was a member of the Grandview Garden Club, the American Boxwood Society, European Boxwood and Topiary Society, and the Memphis and Shelby County Medical Society Auxiliary. A tennis enthusiast, Fay loved her many tennis friends. She was also a beloved member of her Tuesday S&B Sewing Club. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Jack Carter Sanford; her mother, Maxine Smith Tullos; her three daughters, Annie Kate Sanford Worley (Justin) of Memphis, Shelley Tullos Sanford of Nashville, TN and Jessica Sanford Tackett (Paul) of Birmingham, AL; one grandchild, Thomas Parr Worley; sisters, Lillian Tullos Smith of West Memphis, AR and Vicki Tullos Meredith of Tucson, AZ; six nieces and nephews. She also leaves her gardening assistant, Mr. Charlie L. Lee, and household assistant, Mrs. Josephine Jones. She was preceded in death by her father, W. T. Tullos, Jr. and her brother, W.T. Tullos, III. Funeral services will be held at Second Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 20 with the visitation one hour prior to the service. The family requests that memorials be sent to Wings Cancer Foundation, Jones Oncology Research, Ronald McDonald House, or the charity of the donor’s choice.Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119, (901)767-8930, “Behind the Stone Wall”.Location: Southeast Rotunda Arrow Color: Blue
